Le Zoo d'Abidjan

The glory days of Abidjan zoo may be in the past, but despite the sense of neglect a new team is trying to make the best of a site the continues to have a good deal of potential.

It's still a good place to see a variety of animals including chimpanzees, baboons, crocodiles, pygmy hippos and snakes, as well as enjoy the pleasant leafy surroundings.
The zoo staff are friendly and work is underway to improve the visitor experience as well as the conditions for the animals.
The entrance is opposite the Military hospital (HMA) and there's a small charge for entry ranging from 100 cfa for children (aged 4-12), 200 cfa for students and military personnel up to 300 cfa for normal visitors. Those with a camera pay 1000 cfa.

The star attraction remains CAN, the elephant born on the day Ivory Coast football team won the African cup of nations trophy in 1992. You can get quite close to her and she's relatively tame – though be careful with him and some of the monkeys who are always happy to take a hat or camera if it comes within their grasp.

With a bit of work, this could be a major attraction, but it continues to be worth a visit even if some of the cages aren't ideal. In the past some visitors have reported security concerns in the vicinity of the zoo – just take precautions when entering and exiting the zoo – there is parking space to the right after you drive through the entrance.
